All Blacks v Ireland Preview - 1st Test

Now that the Southern Hemisphere sabbatical is over, New Zealand will be back in action this weekend for the first time in 224 days. The All Blacks will host the Irish side for under a month in their first tour of New Zealand since 2012 and during this time Ireland has five scheduled matches, three of which are against New Zealand whilst the other two are against the Maori All Blacks (MAB). Check out our preview to what should be a thrilling opening clash at Eden Park.

Recent Form

It took Ireland 111 years (28 matches) to beat the famed New Zealand XV for the first time back in 2016 and since that first win, there has been a change in results for the Irish side. They have won three times out of their last five matches.

The Shamrocks most recently played against MAB where they lost 32-17, 86% of the points scored in this game were done so in the first half (32-10) with Ireland managing the only points of the 2nd half with a converted try. Ireland were the marginal favourite to win this game (@ around 1.80) but ended up being thoroughly outclassed by the New Zealand native side.

Ireland's loss has meant that their value on them to win has gone up by a significant margin, they currently sit close to 4.00 on their odds to win but the one issue is that they have never overcome New Zealand in their backyard.

The experimental side that got dismantled by the MAB has been deconstructed and 10 of the players who beat the All Blacks in November have come into the side. Conor Murray, Joey Carberry and Bundee Aki who captained the Ireland team against MAB have been sidelined and may make an appearance later on in the game. Jamison Gibson-Park and James Lowe were game-changers in their win over New Zealand in November return to the lineup as well.

Ireland +13.5 Handicap

This game bodes well for the spectator for numerous reasons, Ireland have won more than they have lost against the All Blacks in their last five games but have never won in New Zealand despite having nine attempts since the start of the century.

However, Ireland have just played a game against the Maori All Blacks and won the Triple Crown in the Six Nations but the Kiwis haven’t played a professional game for seven months. There are lots of different criteria that positively and negatively impact both teams' chances of winning and because of that, we think the handicap market is the best way to go.

The evens line is floating around 11.5 but we would prefer to go up a few bounds to increase the chances of a winning a bet, if we take Ireland +13.5 we would have had a winning bet in four out of the last five games against the two sides and also in all of their last ten games against tier one sides.

IRELAND +13.5 HANIDICAP
