Which Major Sports Brands have seen the Biggest Growth?

Major Sports Brands Biggest Growth

Looking at the market capitalisation of five of the world’s biggest sports brands, we can see how their values have shifted over the last five years.

1. Lululemon - 301% increase

Lululemon stands out, with its market capitalisation quadrupling from $16 billion at the end of 2018 to $65 billion by the end of 2023. This remarkable growth reflects the brand’s successful expansion in recent years and the wider trend towards premium athleisure wear. Their focus on quality, building a community, and expanding its male customer base have likely contributed to this growth.

2. Nike - 41% increase

Nike, always a dominant player in the athletic apparel industry, saw its market cap grow by 41%, increasing from $117 billion at the end of 2018 to $165 billion by 2023. Despite the competitive landscape, Nike has managed to maintain its market leader status through consistent innovation, effective global marketing campaigns, and strategic partnerships.

3. Puma - 16% increase

Puma experienced a modest growth of 16%, with its market cap increasing from $7 billion to $8 billion. This growth, although not as impressive as the likes of Nike or Lululemon, reflects Puma’s steady market presence and that its collaborations with celebrities and athletes have helped keep it relevant in a crowded market.

4. Adidas - 13% decrease

Adidas saw a decline in market cap of 13%, dropping from $42 billion at the end of 2018 to $36 billion in 2023. This decrease could be attributed to challenges such as intense competition, changing consumer preferences, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, Adidas remains a significant player in the market.

5. Under Armour - 51% decrease

Under Armour faced the most significant decrease, halving its market cap from $8 billion to $4 billion. In 2018, Under Armour was forced to drop out of a lucrative deal to become the uniform provider of Major League Baseball and also had to close its physical stores as a result of the pandemic.

Methodology

We built a list of hundreds of sportswear brands sold by major retailers such as SportsDirect and JD Sports. We then used Google Ads Keyword Planner to find the number of global searches in 2023 for each, narrowing this list down to a shortlist of the top 50 most searched for all sports brands and also for luxury sports brands.

Each of the top 50 was then given a normalised score out of 10 for its searches, Instagram followers, X followers and TikTok followers. A final average of these scores was then calculated.

We also found the number of searches in the UK for the same period.

Data on market capitalisation were taken from CompaniesMarketCap taking end-of-year figures for 2018 and 2023.

We also created a list of sportswear products and pieces and again took the annual UK searches from Keyword Planner.

Finally, we used articles such as the following to create a list of influencers known for wearing sportswear and ranked them based on their followings on Instagram, X and TikTok.
