Methodology

We began by using the official Premier League website to create a seed list of all 51 football teams that have ever taken part in the Premier League. Luton Town was excluded from the list due to the current ongoing 2023/24 season being their first appearance in the Premier League. This reduced the list to 50 teams.

In order to work out the highest-performing Premier League teams of all time, we used Statbunker to gather the overall statistics on the following factors for each club: number of matches played, number of matches won, number of matches lost, number of goals scored and number of goals conceded.

We then used this data to work out the percentage of matches that each team had won and lost, as well as the average number of goals scored and conceded per game. Each team was given a normalised score out of 10 for each factor before an average of these scores was taken. Due to the current 2023/24 season still being ongoing, we used Transfermarkt.co.uk to remove this season’s statistics from the all-time data.

Next, in order to work out the highest-performing home kit colours, we used the official Premier League website again to determine the colour/colours of each team’s home kit. Cardiff City was classified as both blue and red due to having a season in each of these colours (2013/14 in red and 2018/19 in blue).

We used Football-Data.co.uk to gather the home statistics for Cardiff City for each of these seasons. We used Statbunker again to gather the home statistics for the same factors mentioned previously for each club and then combined these according to each team’s home kit colour. Each home kit colour was given a normalised score out of 10 for each factor before an average of these scores was taken.

Data surrounding the team, manager and captain with the most Premier League wins was sourced from MyFootballFacts.com.

All data was collected on 27 October 2023.
