Claressa Shields v Savannah Marshall Preview

Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall may officially be middleweights, but in the world of female boxing that’s essentially akin to being heavyweights, with the best in the division set to go head-to-head. Shields comes in as the slight favourite, understandably given she holds all the belts other than the WBO title held by Marshall, while the American also possesses a fantastic record as both a professional and as an amateur.

Styles

There’s further intrigue given the contrast in style, both inside and out of the ring. Shields is brash and outspoken where Marshall is calm, modest and soft-spoken. The American boast ridiculous speed and is content to buzz around and bide her time, but lacks the same punching power of her opponent, who is more willing to step forward and take risks in search of the knockout blow.

Previous Meeting

One of the key talking points in the build up centres around the one and only meeting between the pair to date, where Marshall inflicted Shields’ solitary defeat in a sanctioned boxing contest. That came at the 2012 amateur World Championships, where Marshall went on to claim gold, though it’s worth noting that Shields is four years younger and was just 17 at the time. Moreover, Shields has proven pedigree having taken gold at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics before turning professional.

Still, there remains a significant size advantage for the Brit, who stands three and a half inches taller at 5ft 11 ½ inches, as well as possessing a four-inch reach advantage too. Both are expected to come in at around 165lbs however, as aside from the stylistic differences, this looks set to be a seriously close contest.

Shields By Decision Or Technical Decision

Indeed, the two share virtually identical professional records. Shields has won all 12 of her fights, though only two have come by knockout as she lacks deadly power, with the other eight all coming by unanimous decision.

By contrast, Marshall also holds a perfect 12 out of 12 record, but only two came by decision, while eight of the 10 knockouts came inside three rounds. Each of Shields’ last eight appearances have gone the full 10 rounds, while each of Marshall’s last eight have ended by KO or TKO.

With that in mind, if Marshall is to prevail over the self-styled “Gwoat” then she’s likely to have to get the job don early. Shields is relentless and it certainly can’t be suggested that she lacks the necessary stamina to go the distance, but it’s hard to see any victory for the American other than one by decision.

Although Marshall appears to benefit from increased confidence after working with Peter Fury, Shields’ record is hard to overlook.

Given the latter’s sole defeat came when she was just 17 years old, we wouldn’t read too much into that contest now. However, while Shields by decision or technical decision appears a smart play, it may well be worth having a small flutter on a Marshall victory in the early rounds at a much bigger price.
