Anthony Joshua v Jermaine Franklin Preview

Antony Joshua is set to return to the big stage on Saturday night as he takes on Jermaine Franklin at the 02 Arena in London.

Joshua vs Franklin will be the main event of a jam-packed card and it’ll mark the first time Joshua has fought since his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in August 2022. The former Team GB athlete has lost his last two fights, and a victory over Jermaine Franklin will be nothing short of a necessity.

Mutual Respect

Jermaine Franklin will also be looking to avenge a recent loss, with the American losing to Dillian Whyte in November. Speaking at a recent press conference, Franklin said that he’s never lacked confidence as both a boxer and a person and that his response to the Whyte loss was to simply get back to the drawing board and improve his game.

The glittering name-value of Anthony Joshua, his world-famous status, and mainstream following is a stark contrast to the quiet and humble Franklin, who spoke about his opponent respectfully and without hyperbole. Joshua returned the favour by praising Franklin’s body of work, saying that he had all the attributes to become a top fighter.

The intriguing fight will take place on Saturday 1 April at approximately 10:30 pm.

A Must Win For Joshua

Anthony Joshua has lost three of his last five fights and the Englishman has used three different trainers since his first loss to Usyk back in 2021.

The 33-year-old has admitted that his fighting has been off the boil and pinpointed the loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. in 2019 as the start of his slump, saying ‘something wasn’t right’ during his ring walk.

Joshua will need to emerge from the bout victorious if he wishes to bring his stock back to the heights it was in the late 2010s. A fourth loss in six fights would be disastrous for the mega-star, so he’ll need to be on top of his game if he wishes to dispatch the promising Franklin.

Ruiz Comparison

Jermaine Franklin suffered a loss to Dillian Whyte at Wembley back in November, but the 29-year-old is determined to bounce back and write his name into boxing folklore by beating Joshua in his home country.

Franklin’s fighting style has been compared to Andy Ruiz - AJ’s scourge in 2019 and the fighter who shocked the world by defeating the Brit almost four years ago. Franklin may be the underdog, but recent history has taught us never to discount a fighter until the bout has concluded.

If Jermaine Franklin wins at the 02 on Saturday, then his status will rise higher than perhaps even he himself thought possible. The two fighters are at radically different stages of their careers, which is why the upcoming fight between them is generating so much intrigue.
