The game grid consists of six reels, each of which contains six symbols, but unlike Katmandu Gold, it does not expand. Katmandu X is a cluster pays slot, which means that rewards are awarded when matching symbols are adjacent to one another in any horizontal or vertical direction. The avalanche mechanism then removes winning combinations from the grid, generating a wild symbol before the remaining voids are filled by symbols falling from above. On the bottom of the paytable are four blue, green, purple, and red stone-carved symbols, followed by four animal symbols representing the highest payouts. Clusters of five identical symbols pay between 0.01 and 1.50 times the wager, while clusters of 16 or more identical symbols pay between 4 and 100 times the wager. 

The Wild Strike feature may arbitrarily activate and replace symbols with wilds, exploding wilds, or multiplier wilds.

In addition to wild multipliers, Katmandu X applies a global win multiplier to each victorious cluster. Each winning symbol and each symbol eliminated by explosive wilds contributes to the total multiplier. Any applicable wild multipliers are applied first, followed by the total multiplier, when winnings occur. In the basic game, the total multiplier resets between spins.

All pay symbols exist in four distinct sizes from regular 1x1 to Super 2x2, Mega 3x3, and Epic 4x4. Each large symbol is equivalent to the number of 1x1 symbols it contains. On their descent, re-dropped large symbols pulverise 1x1 symbols. Symbols that are not pulverised are identical symbols, wilds, bonus symbols, or free drop symbols. Any vacant spaces beneath a large symbol are filled with smaller versions of the same symbol.

Three standard bonus symbols activate the free drips bonus mode. In this mode, the cumulative multiplier is not reset until the end of the feature. In this bonus as well as the Super bonus, landing Yin and Yang symbols awards extra free spins.
