Opening Draws For Both Teams
It was a solid result for Schalke on the opening weekend as they managed to secure a goalless stalemate against last years’ fifth-place finishers M’gladbach. Both sides had their fair share of chances though as new signing Benito Raman sliced wide for David Wagner’s men, while Alexander Nubel found the upright for the Foals.
Meanwhile, Bayern were left agitated by their opening day result at Hertha, settling for a 2-2 draw, though they still had 70% of the possession and over three times as many shots as their visitors.
Head-To-Head Dominance For Bayern
This fixture has been one of disappointment for Schalke fans in recent times, losing eight of their nine winless encounters with the Bavarians since the start of 2015/16, including a DFB-Pokal clash in March 2017 that ended 3-0. Indeed, the Royal Blues netted just four goals across those matches, though six of them have still seen more than two goals, while perhaps the most disappointing record for them is the four straight defeats now on home turf.
Even more concerningly, Bayern have multiple recruits at their disposal, with new signings Ivan Perisic, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Hernandez available to be brought into the starting side, which will likely see them fare much better.
Schalke Below Par Last Season
Last season was a dreadful campaign for Schalke as they finished 14th in the league, with the only two positives being a victory over bitter rivals Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion and a run to the last 16 of the Champions League.
Other than that, their record of W2-D3-L13 against top-half finishers was well below par seeing as the season before that they’d lost just four of their 16 such outings on their way to a runners-up spot. We don’t think they’re quite capable of repeating that feat, but it would be a surprise to see them put in as dismal a display as we saw last season.

The best travelling side in the Bundesliga last term was unsurprisingly Niko Kovac’s charges, as excluding fellow top-four finishers they won an impressive 11 of their 14 outings, though they only kept their opposition out in four. By contrast, the hosts won only four of their 17 outings at the Veltins-Arena and although they’re under new management, that will still be a hard record to turn on its head. However, given Wagner’s men have been averaging over two goals per game since the start of pre-season, we’re at least expecting them to have enough about them to score a consolation strike.
