LIVERPOOL, MAN CITY AND REAL MADRID ALL TO WIN AT 9/4
Recent Form
Real Madrid will be hugely buoyed by their El Clasico win on Saturday, following a poor week in which they lost home games to promoted Cadiz and a coronavirus-ravaged Shakhtar Donetsk.
Meanwhile, Gladbach nearly took all three points from the San Siro when visiting Inter Milan last week, with Romelu Lukaku bailing his side out with a 90th-minute equalizer, as the Foals are now unbeaten in five now since an opening day loss in the Bundesliga to Dortmund.
Gladbach may find their squad a little more fresh for this clash, especially in attack. Whereas Zinedine Zidane will have to field the likes of Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema after their opening loss to Shakhtar, Marco Rose was able to rest some of his men at the weekend.
Key quartet Jonas Hofmann, Florian Neuhaus, Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea were all used as second-half substitutes, while left-back Ramy Besebaini was rested entirely.
However, both sides have their injury problems and Gladbach will be without Andreas Poulsen, Valentino Lazaro, Laszlo Benes (all injured), Denis Zakaria and Mamadou Doucoure (doubtful), while Jordan Beyer is recovering from coronavirus.
Real Madrid are without Dani Carvajal, Alvaro Odriozola, Martin Odegaard, while Eden Hazard and Mariano Diaz are doubts.
Gladbach have never qualified for the Champions League knockouts and finished third behind Istanbul Basaksehir and Roma in last season’s Europa League, though they have demonstrated a big-game appetite in recent times.
They beat Roma at home and drew with them away last term, took a point hosting Man City in 2016/17 and only went down 2-1 hosting Barcelona in that same pool, while they’ve beaten Bayern three times in their past six clashes.
In fact, they’re just one of three teams to beat the Bavarians under Hansi Flick, with their stalemate against Inter last week just another demonstration of how they rise to the big occasion.
Real may have tucked a hugely important win under their belts last time out, but they haven’t been firing on all cylinders in the new campaign and in fact, going back to late July they’ve only won three of 15 matches by more than a single strike and never by a greater margin than two.
Gladbach may only have won just once in their last eight on home turf in Europe (W1-D3-L4), but only one of these saw them go down by more than a single strike, so we’d expect them to be competitive.
Real Madrid To Win And Both Teams To Score
Having key men available in attack should at least enable them to get onto the scoreboard. They’ve found the net at least once in each of their last 19 at home in all competitions, and twice or more in each of their 13 victories over this period, as both teams found the net in 17 of these games.
Real Madrid To Win 2-1
Real Madrid do however possess more firepower than Gladbach’s typical opponents and will have some joy in the final third. Gladbach’s last three home defeats have come against Istanbul Basaksehir (2-1), Dortmund (2-1) and Leverkusen (3-1) and those seem the most probable outcomes here.
