This will be the third meeting between these sides in just over two months and even though 43 places separate them in the world rankings, both previous clashes have ended all square and there’s no reason to think this might end too differently.
Despite defeat to Slovakia in the last round of fixtures, the Scots are still in pole position to get promoted to League A, and a win away in Israel would do exactly that.
While Israel can’t win the group to achieve promotion themselves, they sit just one point off bottom and know full well that a defeat here may relegate them to league three for the next edition of the Nations League, though that relies heavily on whether or not Slovakia can get maximum points off the Czech Republic, who are gunning for promotion themselves.
Those results against Scotland and the fact that they’re not bottom of this group might suggest Israel are in some good form, though a W2-D4-L7 record across their last 13 matches, doesn’t set the pulses racing, especially when you consider one of those wins came over a Latvia side ranked 142nd in world football.
Even though both previous draws came away in Scotland, we’re reluctant to get behind them picking up maximum points even on home soil with form like that.
Draw And Under 2.5 Goals
We’re also not too confident of Scotland’s chances either. While they’ve won three of their five games so far to lead the way in this group, all three victories came by narrow one goal margins and although morale is high in the camp right now having qualified for the Euros, both their qualifying wins came via penalty shootouts and that morale didn’t exactly help them in their last match against Slovakia at the weekend.
The biggest hinderance to Scotland’s chances is the fact that captain Andy Robertson is injured. He didn’t feature in their weekend match after being a doubt, and that was the first match the Scots have lost in 10 games.
It’s unlikely that Robertson will feature here and risk injuring himself further, especially with the long list of injuries that Liverpool have accumulated in recent weeks.
While Scotland have coped well in recent years without their skipper, winning three of their last four such matches, two of those victories came over Kazakhstan and Cyprus so we’d take those results with a pinch of salt.
It seems like another low scorer could be on the cards, with Scotland seeing an average of 1.43 goals per game from their seven matches in 2020 and with very little to separate the sides the draw is worth a punt too.
