We are back on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile for their three-day Cambridgeshire meeting this week, where two Group One races are featured on Saturday. The Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes, run over 6f, is a race for two-year-old fillies and has been won for the past two years by Aidan O’Brien, who scored with Brave Anna (2106) and Clemmie (2107).
The leading horses from the Cheveley Park Stakes often go on to compete in the following season’s 1,000 Guineas, although the last filly to do the double was Special Duty in 2009-10.
We look at each of the 16 runners…
ANGEL’S HIDEAWAY (John Gosden)
Has had a busy juvenile campaign with six runs and has wo n two of them. Having been beaten seven lengths by Pretty Pollanna in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes over the same trip on the July Course, she duly won the Group 3 Princess of Margaret at Ascot two weeks later. However, she was last of nine behind Fairyland in the Lowther at York, when hanging right. She has a bit to prove on that run. (Official Rating 106) Genting Casino Odds – 14/1
COMEDY (Karl Burke)
A winner of three of her five starts, including a Deauville Group 3 in July. She was easily held by Pretty Pollyanna in the Prix Morny at Deaville on her last start last month and does not look capable of turning that form around at present. (OR 103) Genting Casino Odds – 14/1
COME ON LEICESTER (Richard Hannon)
Landed a fillies’ novice race at Windsor in May and has progressed without getting her nose in front in five subsequent runs, but was not beaten far in a Salisbury Group 3 earlier this month. She appears to be making up the numbers in a hot renewal. (OR 94) Genting Casino Odds – 50/1
CORAL BEACH (Aidan O’Brien)
With 10 runs already this season, she lacks nothing in experience, but remains a maiden and has not tackled anything like this class before. (OR -) Genting Casino Odds – 100/1
FAIRYLAND (Aidan O’Brien)
This daughter of Kodiac has always been highly regarded by the Ballydoyle yard and her sole defeat in four starts came by three-quarters of a length in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She bounced back after a two-month break to land the Group 2 Lowther at York, having dictated the pace. While that form does not look particularly strong, she has a great attitude and it would be no surprise to see her in the mix again. (OR -) Genting Casino Odds – 8/1
GOSSAMER WINGS (Aidan O’Brien)
Another possible contender for the Ballydoyle yard, who has only had a couple of runs over 6f, having raced five other times over the minimum 5f trip. There was plenty to like about her runner-up effort over 5f when beaten a short- head by Signora Cabello in the Albany, yet she has not yet proven she gets this trip and was well held by Pretty Pollyanna in the Duchess of Cambridge. (OR -) Genting Casino Odds – 20/1
JUST WONDERFUL (Aidan O’Brien)
Has shaped like a filly who will progress for a step up in trip rather than a step down. She landed a 1m Group 3 on testing ground at the Curragh earlier this month but had no chance in the 7f Group 1 Moyglare Stakes at the same track last time. Not one of the stable’s leading hopes. (OR -) Genting Casino Odds – 16/1
LADY KAYA (Sheila Lavery)
One of the cheapest buys in the line-up and holds a big chance on her run behind Skitter Scatter when touched off in the Group 1 Moyglare at the Curragh. She was a bit flat in the Debutante Stakes at the same track before that and the way she travelled over the 7f last time suggested that she would be a real force over 6f, which she gets here. Leading chance. (OR -) Genting Casino Odds – 6/1
MAIN EDITION (Mark Johnston)
A winner of four of her six starts, including two at Group 3 level, was fifth in the Moyglare after being given a positive ride. She did not quite appear to see out the 7f and drops back in trip. Johnston has had a terrific season and his string remains in great form, so she cannot be written off lightly. (OR 107) Genting Casino Odds – 12/1
NO WAY JOSE (Brian Meehan)
Landed her novice on the AW at Lingfield in July but was well held when upped to Group 3 company last time and her odds reflect her chance. (OR 91) Genting Casino Odds – 66/1
PRETTY POLLYANNA (Michael Bell)
Pictured above, she registered a brilliant seven-length triumph in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket’s July Course before beating the colts in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville last month. She has always looked like she would get a mile, so the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas must be the target next spring. She looks the one to beat in a race where either the market leader or second-favourite has scored in 10 of the last 12 renewals. (OR 117) Genting Casino Odds – 5/4
QUEEN OF BERMUDA (William Haggas)
Supplemented at cost of £20,000, having landed the Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes at Ayr on Saturday. That was her fourth win in eight starts and was her first try over 6f, having already shown she was capable at that level with two smart efforts in France. She won with a bit to spare and seems to be improving. (OR 105) Genting Casino Odds – 10/1
SERVALAN (Jessica Harrington)
Only had four starts and won a Listed Naas 6f contest on her second try in May. Was given a 73-day break after finishing sixth to Signora Cabello in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, and may have lacked sharpness when last of eight to Ten Sovereigns in the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh on the first day of this month. May be more to come. (OR -) Genting Casino Odds – 33/1
SIGNORA CABELLO (John Quinn)
Finished three-quarters of a length second to Pretty Pollyanna in the Morny, four lengths clear of the rest of the field. This daughter of Camacho went into that French contest on the back of four straight triumphs, including in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes and the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin. She is highly respected and may be the one to put it up to the favourite again. (OR 115) Genting Casino Odds – 4/1
SO PERFECT (Aidan O’Brien)
She only failed by half a length in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh last month, having beaten subsequent winner Skitter Scatter in a Group 3 there in July. The form of the Queen Mary, in which she was three-quarters of a length fourth, puts her bang in contention with the likes of Signora Cabello and stablemate Gossamer Wings. (OR -) Genting Casino Odds – 7/1
THE MACKEM BULLET (Brian Ellison)
Having been touched off by Fairyland in the Lowther, she was supplemented for this at a cost of £20,000. She still has a bit to find with Angel’s Hideway on her Princess Margaret running when almost three-length third, but is going the right way and could be capable of grabbing a place. (OR 105) Genting Casino Odds – 20/1
