This marquee final is nothing new for darts viewers, with this being a reply of the 2013/14 final in which Magic Mike ran out 7-4 winner, while he’s also won all 10 televised meetings between the two. They have met each other 78 times across the course of their careers, and the Dutchman’s 77.6% win rate will stand him in good stead here, though the last five reads a more even 3-2 in favour of the defending champion, while his form this year leaves much to be desired.
Indeed, only once has van Gerwen registered a 100+ average in his five matches so far, while never before has he had four averages below that figure in a tournament. It was his ability to close out the deciding legs in his semi-final against the Asp, as he won four of five such legs in that match, while his final opponent is in red hot form heading into this.
Snake Bite’s ability to consistently hit 180s made the difference between himself and Gerwyn Price in the other heated semi-final, which the Scotsman ran out 6-3 winner with 16 180s, the most he has ever recorded on this stage which takes his tally up to 57 for the tournament, over double that of van Gerwen’s.
While this will likely be a close contest, Wright has a rather dismal record in Major Finals, with his 2017 UK Open his only such career victory to date and many of his final defeats coming to van Gerwen himself. We envisage a similarly frustrating night for Snake Bite, though there’s little value to be had backing the Dutchman to defend his crown, especially as the Scot seems to be the in form player coming into the match and the handicap appeals more at the prices, while a tight encounter looks to be in the offing and the total sets also looks to hold some weight.
