VAR Hampers City Again
It wasn’t meant to be for Man City in gameweek two as VAR yet again ruled out a late winning goal for them against Spurs. They failed to make their dominance throughout the game pay off despite having 56% of the possession and five times as many shots on target than their visitors.
In fact, they hit an astonishing 30 shots towards goals and although only a third of those hit the target, anyone with an output like that has to eventually see some sort of return.
However, annoyingly for them Spurs managed to convert two of their three total shots and next opponents Bournemouth will certainly have had a watchful eye on their approach to the game.
City A Different Proposition For Bournemouth
The Cherries have been fortunate in the fact that they’ve faced promoted outfits Sheffield Utd and Aston Villa across the opening two weekends, as they drew 1-1 with the former and won last time out against the latter 2-1.
However, they’ll have to up their performance levels for this clash against the reigning Premier League champions, who’ve won each of their eight meetings since their promotion to England’s top division by an aggregate scoreline of 25-3.

Interestingly, if we look at how Pep Guardiola has performed across his opening four games since arriving at City for the start of the 2016/17 season, we can see that his side have conceded in 10 of their 14 such appearances, while if we compare that to the rest of the time he’s been in the dugout then we can see that they’ve kept a clean sheet in 46% of their 102 outings.
That is a 25% difference and so the value certainly lies in backing their opposition to at least net a consolation strike in the early stages of the season.
Eddie Howe’s charges do hold a horrendous record against ‘Big Six’ sides though, going W7-D4-L37 from their 48 such matches since being promoted for the 2015/16 season.
However, they’ve netted in over half of those outings, while it should also be noted that five of their seven victories have come at the Vitality Stadium. In fact, it was only in January that they beat Chelsea here whilst putting four goals past them, before then beating Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs in May.
Raheem Sterling To Score Anytime
Not that the Citizens will be specifically trying to break records for most victories in a row, but that result will still hurt them last week as it ended a run of 15 on the bounce. Indeed, since the start of that run when they beat Arsenal 3-1 back in February, they’ve averaged 2.4 goals per game as they fired five at West Ham on the opening day this season and still another two past the Lilywhites. With that in mind, we have to have one of the Man City forwards to get themselves onto the scoreboard.
The man who they’ve turned to of late has been Raheem Sterling. The winger has netted five goals from three matches across all competitions so far this term, netting a hat-trick at the London Stadium and, having scored in seven of his eight starts against the Cherries in all competitions, plundering a total of 10 goals, we’re surprised to not see him at a shorter price.
