Aston Villa enjoy a healthy six-point cushion over the relegation zone, but they’ve edged closer in that direction with three defeats on the bounce. They conceded eight goals across fixtures with Tottenham, Wolves and Arsenal, though they haven’t been short of output themselves.
They’ve only failed to score once in 11 appearances across all competitions this season, away against Chelsea in the league, with a plethora of different goalscorers contributing to the cause. Indeed, Aston Villa’s past 10 goals have been shared around as no player scored more than once.
West Ham held firm to earn a goalless stalemate with Man City and take them to penalties in the League Cup on Wednesday, ending the latter’s quest for a fifth straight title in that competition as they netted all five spot kicks in the shootout.
David Moyes was even able to rest key men Michail Antonio and Declan Rice in that fixture, as he’s juggled his squad well this term to cope with the extra physical demands their participation in the Europa League has brought with it.
The Hammers have lost just two of 14 games in all competitions this season, winning nine of these over 90 minutes.
They’ve even managed four consecutive clean sheets as they’ve also shutout other top-half outfits Everton and Tottenham, and while their past three appearances have come on home turf, they’ve only actually conceded a single goal from their past five on the road.
West Ham Draw No Bet
Given Aston Villa are scoring goals despite their poor form, the visitors may struggle to land another shutout here, especially with both teams scoring in each of the past three meetings between the sides.
However, West Ham remain unbeaten in their four clashes with Villa since the latter returned to the top flight, doing the double over them last term, and unquestionably arrive at this fixture in better shape.
The visitors are only missing Czech duo Vladimir Coufal and Alex Kral at present, with Ben Johnson at right-back the only back-up player set to feature here in a largely settled team.
Dean Smith also has good news on the injury front with winger Leon Bailey returning to the fold, while he has a further boost with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez returning in time from Argentina having travelled to his homeland for a family emergency.
The Aston Villa manager is however struggling to find the right formula to get the best out of his charges.
He’s been keen to pair summer recruit Danny Ings with Ollie Watkins in attack, switching to a back three with the width coming from the wing-backs in recent weeks, but he may choose to shunt Watkins out to the flanks and return to a more familiar back four in an attempt to get the team back on track.
