Record At The MCG
England don’t have as poor a record here at the MCG as you’d expect, as since this venue became an exclusively Boxing Day stadium for test match cricket in 1990, the tourists have a good W4-D1-L5 record, with the most recent outing in 2017 ending all square.
While Australia were building some momentum in Melbourne outings, losing just two of 19 such outings between 1999 and 2017, they’ve now won just one of their last four tests here (lost two, drawn one).
Those defeats did come against an India side littered with star-quality, and this touring England side aren’t showing enough firepower to show they can cope with 90,000 home fans here, and it’s no surprise to see Australia heavy favourites yet again.
Australia To Win Smith Top Scorer
Marnus Labuschagne has overtaken Joe Root as the best test batsman in the world at the moment, and he’s certainly looking like the main man for Australia at the moment, though in his four innings here at the MCG he averages just 39.5 and there’s another who thrives here.
There’s very few better pairings in sport than Steve Smith and Boxing Day at the MCG, with his eight matches here yielding centuries in half of them at an average of 91.6.
That average is even more impressive considering his last three innings here saw him muster up a total of 15 runs, though you can’t keep Smith down for long, and we’ll get behind him to guide his country to a 3-0 lead.
