The current standings for the Bledisloe Cup see New Zealand streaks ahead with 48 wins to Australia’s 12, and with the Kiwis at 1/12 to take a 1-0 advantage into the second game for this three-part series. The opening two matches will take place at Eden Park
Auckland is perhaps the hardest place in Test rugby to go and get a win against the hosts. In 88 Test matches at the ground since 1921, the All Blacks have lost just 10 times and their winning percentage is 87%.
In fact, since a defeat to France here in 1994, they’ve seen off 43 opponents, with only two draws, against South Africa in 1994 to start the run, and the British and Irish Lions in 2017.
In order to put that monumental record into perspective, the next best run at a single stadium was by England between 1999-2003, when they went just 22 matches unbeaten at Twickenham.
Recent Form
The Aussies come into this off the back of a 2-1 series victory against a much-depleted French outfit, but Dave Rennies men will have their work cut out in order to get anything from this opener.
They’ve lost all 15 encounters at Eden Park this century against their hosts and haven’t won here since 1986, including all seven by 20 or more points since the start of 2012.
To make matters worse, they’ll be without Marika Koroibete, Isi Naisarani and Pone Fa’amausili, who have been dropped for breaking team protocol.
That seriously puts them up against it heading to Auckland this weekend and they could be in for a serious wake-up call.
New Zealand’s warm-up for this series has seen them blitz the Tongans by 100 points, as well as back-to-back victories over the Fijians by more than 30 points in each.
All Blacks -20 Handicap
It’s therefore no surprise to see them as such short favourites, and we can’t see any angle but getting behind them on the handicap.
The line is drawn at 22 points, but we’d prefer to get a little cover based on their historical head-to-heads with the Aussie and take the current price on the 20-point line instead at a slightly shorter price.
