Blackjack: The Basics

Before we take a dive into the global differences, let’s cover the basics. The goal of the game is this: get as close to 21 as possible without exceeding.

  • Number cards are worth their face value.
  • Face cards are worth 10.
  • Aces may be worth either 1 or 11.

Each player receives two cards, and some game-changing choices may be made after the cards are dealt:

  • Hit: Receive another card.
  • Stand: Continue with your current cards.
  • Double Down: Double your bet and receive another card.
  • Split: If two cards of the same value were received, you may choose to split.

Along with these, the dealer will also follow specific rules.

Blackjack Across the Globe

Let’s now explore some exciting regional variations!

European Blackjack

Blackjack has a rich history in Europe. As you play European Blackjack, you’ll find that dealers may use two decks of cards, and some payouts are fixed. Another key difference here is that there is no hole card for the dealer. This adds a layer of mystery and suspense for each player involved.

Other variations include the following:

  • The dealer must hit at 16, but stand at 17.
  • Players may not double down after a split.

UK Blackjack

In UK Blackjack, it is common to see games played with 6 to 8 decks. After the players place their bets, the dealer will deal one card to each player and then themselves. These will be placed face-up on the table before another card is dealt to each player. Depending on which cards are received, players may choose to hit or stand.

American Blackjack

American Blackjack is known for its variety! Games in the US often use up to 8 decks in a shoe, and the rules come with more flexibility; such as being able to double down after splitting. This adds more dynamics to the game.

Other differences include:

  • The dealer may peek for Blackjack, since there is no hole card.
  • Players may double down on any hand value.
  • Players may split up to three times.

Chinese Blackjack

Also known as 21-point, ban-nag, and ban-luck, Chinese Blackjack comes with unique twists that make it more interesting to the Asian audience. While the cards are valued similarly to conventional blackjack, there are a few exceptions for the Aces.

The values of the Aces are dependent on how many cards a player has, as follows:

  • If the player has two cards, Aces may be worth 10 or 11.
  • If the player has three cards, Aces may be worth 1 or 10.
  • If the player has four or more cards, Aces are only worth 1.

Online Blackjack

The online world has opened up new avenues of Blackjack possibilities! You may find a huge variety of blackjack games online, from classic versions to exciting new twists. Some online blackjack games even allow you to play with a live dealer for a more authentic casino experience.
