Poker player Mark Evans from North Ferriby, came, saw and conquered in Sheffield on Sunday evening, when he took home a cool £54,060 by winning the Steel City’s GPS Grand Final at the Genting Club.

255 entries started out for this hugely popular tournament, including reigning champion Richard Milner (13th this year) and a final table that included previous GPS winner Yucel Eminoglu and a host of well known poker professionals such as Will Kassouf, Dominic Mahoney, Tom Langley, Jamie O’Connor.

The final table looked like being a steady affair to start with until short stacked Guy Taylor was forced to shove his pocket sixes in but ran right in to the into the ACES of Will Kassouf.

Another local favourite James Conway was next to leave after enduring a cold deck all night, whilst Dom Mahoney had a roller-coaster final table, recovering from just 40,000 chips to 600,000 with some big hands until his luck ran off the tracks when his pocket nines, for a million chip pot, failed to hold up against the A-Q of Dahe Liu when an Ace on the turn gave the pot to Dahe.

The Mad Turk, Yucel Eminoglu came into the day second in the chip count and finished a credible sixth as he attempted to become the first player to win two GPS trophies.

Jamie ‘Boz’ O’Connor enjoyed huge support from the online streaming audience and finished in 5th place when he was sent from the table by Mark Evans who tabled triple Aces.

Yet again Will Kassouf ran deep in to the tournament before leaving with a handy Christmas present of £14,480, closely followed by Dahe Liu who got his last 400,000 in to the middle with J-9 but couldn’t hit a winner against the K-8 of Evans. The third place finish saw Dahe collect £24,480 for his efforts though.

And then there were just two. Heads up lasted around 30 minutes before the two players got it all in on a J—9—3 flop with Tom Langley holding J-7 for top pair. But the poker gods were smiling on Mark Evans who had J-9 in his pocket for two pairs and we had a new champion! A smiling Langley was happy with his second place finish but Evans was even happier taking home the title and trophy to go with his £54,060 cheque.

Genting Poker Manager Kevin Proctor commented; “This was a successful end to a year of highs and lows and we now look forward to GPS Season IV in 2015, yet again we have enjoyed some great feedback from the players throughout the year and next year we will see more tournaments’ than before in the GPS, including the introduction of GPS Mini events.
