A Sheffield casino will welcome the Chinese New Year in traditional style with the colour and spectacle of a Lion Dance.
Genting Club Sheffield in St Paul’s Place starts the celebrations at midnight on Tuesday 17 February as the dancers wend their way around the venue. A special buffet will also be laid on by chefs from the casino’s Hou-Mei restaurant and ‘lucky money’ red envelopes distributed to celebrate the Year of the Sheep, also known as the Year of the Goat or Ram.
General Manager Kath Barton said: “We are expecting around 1000 guests as it’s the most important festival in the Chinese calendar and a very popular night out.
“There is a great atmosphere and a real sense of excitement. Leading members of the Chinese community will be joining us, along with many of the city’s Chinese students. The wider Sheffield public will also be welcome.”
The Chinese calendar runs on a 12-year cycle with each year named after a different animal in the Chinese zodiac. People are said to share the personality traits with the zodiac animal of the year they were born.
