A Nottingham casino employee whose brother’s life was saved by a blood transfusion encouraged her colleagues to give blood at a new donor centre in the city.
Boglarka Bratkovics, known as BB, showed the way as an eight-strong team from Genting Casino Nottingham attended the nearby Nottingham Blood Donor Centre in North Church Street to give blood.
BB, a pit boss at Genting, said: “The centre is very close to our casino. When I suggested to colleagues we could support it by giving blood I had an amazing response. Most were first time donors and everyone enjoyed the experience. We went out for a meal afterwards to celebrate.”
Five other staff who could not make it will attend a later session.
BB, who has given blood before, added: “I know from personal experience how important it is to maintain blood stocks. My brother Milan was very ill and had a serious operation in our native Hungary last year. He was given a blood transfusion which saved his life and he is doing okay now.”
The Blood Donor Centre opened on 19 May, moving into bigger and better facilities which are centrally located and aimed at attracting more donors from the city’s growing population.
Amanda Eccles, senior marketing coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We are delighted that the Genting Casino team is supporting blood donation. We always need new people in Nottingham to start donating blood to ensure that stocks across the country are healthy now and in the future. I hope that people will be inspired to donate with the knowledge that their donations save lives and that it is an easy thing to do.”
This week is National Blood Week which highlights the importance of giving blood and the need for more donors.
