Birmingham?s Chinatown casino gets ready to welcome Chinese New Year

Coming Soon

Birmingham’s renowned Chinese New Year celebrations will be marked in style with two special evenings at the city’s only Chinatown casino.

Traditional festivities, including a colourful Lion Dance, will feature when the Genting Casino Chinatown welcomes the Year of the Sheep, also known as the Year of the Goat or Ram, on Monday 23 February and Tuesday 24 February.

Around 600 to 700 guests are expected on both dates as the community celebrates the most important festival in the Chinese calendar.

Traditional singers and dancers, a seafood buffet and prize draws offering the chance to win trips to Hong Kong, are among the attractions lined up at the Hurst Street venue. The God of Fortune will also visit to distribute ‘lucky money’ red envelopes.

General manager Julie Eden said: “Our Chinese New Year evenings are a real highlight. They are popular, fun and relaxed occasions which many customers look forward to.

“We are the only casino in Chinatown and have strong links with the Chinese community so it is only natural that we embrace and celebrate this special festival.”

The casino’s events follow on from the public festivities in Birmingham Chinatown on Sunday 22 February.

The Chinese calendar runs on a 12-year cycle with each year named after a different animal in the Chinese zodiac. People are said to share the personality traits with the zodiac animal of the year they were born.

Genting Casino Chinatown employs approximately 110 people. There has been a casino at the site for around 35 years.
