Recent Form
St. Mirren started the campaign reasonably well with their first three fixtures yielding 1-0 wins over Livingston and Hamilton, while they were soundly beaten at Ibrox by Rangers. However, since then they’ve laboured to a draw with Ross County, albeit with 10 men, before losing their most recent clashes with St. Johnstone and Hibs.
The latter result saw them draft in Hearts’ Zdenek Zlamal in goal with their own keepers testing positive for coronavirus, but conceding three times at home was particularly concerning, which doesn’t bode well ahead of the visit of Celtic.
Neil Lennon’s men had already put a combined 14 goals past Hamilton, Icelandic outfit KR Reykjavik and Motherwell at Celtic Park this season, but they haven’t always been as prolific on their travels.
Celtic To Win To Nil
A 5-0 stroll visiting Ross County on Saturday will therefore have delighted the visitors, who should have little trouble in claiming the full three points here.
Celtic also triumphed 5-0 the last time these two met back in March, leaving them with 12 wins from 13 head to heads since 2013/14.
Of course, St. Mirren weren’t in the Premiership in 2015/16 and 2017/18, but since their latest promotion they’ve lost five of six against Celtic, netting just the solitary goal, while they’ve conceded 15 times across the past five meetings since January 2019.
Although the Hoops are capable of running away with proceedings should they find themselves in the mood, we wouldn’t necessarily expect an absolute pummelling.
Prior to their 5-0 win over Ross County last time out, Celtic had been held to a 1-1 draw with Killie and taken until the 83rd minute to find the only goal of the game versus Dundee Utd in their other away games this term.
Meanwhile, once the result is secured, Celtic may take their foot of the gas with a punishing schedule up ahead.
Celtic have now won 11 of 13 unbeaten away league matches sine late October. Although only six of these were wins accompanied by clean sheets, St. Mirren have scored just three goals this term and were the lowest scorers when last season’s action was suspended, while they were the second-lowest scorers going back a season further.
The hosts have now lost without scoring in 10 of 12 matches facing the Old Firm duo since returning to the Premiership in 2018/19, scoring just the single goal, so the win to nil appears a highly likely outcome when taking on in-form opponents.
