Recent Form

Southampton made a dire start to the season as they lost their opening two league games to Palace and Tottenham, as well as going down 3-0 to Championship outfit Brentford in cup action.

However, they’ve since recovered with solid wins over Burnley and West Brom, while last time out they salvaged a 3-3 draw at Chelsea.

The Toffees have consistently excelled in the new campaign with seven wins from eight unbeaten appearances in all competitions, racking up a total of 26 goals across these.

A Merseyside derby with Liverpool is the only time they’ve dropped points, and with victories in all three road trips to Tottenham, Fleetwood and Palace, they appear a good price to get something from this game.

The visitors do have a number of absentees with James Rodriguez, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Mason Holgate, Jonjoe Kenny, Cenk Tosun and Seamus Coleman all injured, while Richarlison is suspended following his red card last time out.

The majority are merely back-up players, but the latter is unquestionably a key man for Carlo Ancelotti and has already contributed four goals and two assists from six starts in all competitions so far this season.

Everton aren’t just reliant upon the Brazilian however, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is having a fine campaign alongside Alex Iwobi impressing when handed the chance.

Everton To Win And Both Teams To Score

Clean sheets have been harder to come by though and they’ve now failed to shut their opponents out in six consecutive matches, conceding twice in four of these as West Brom, Fleetwood, Brighton and Liverpool all managed to do so.

In fact, excluding cup clashes with lower league outfits, the Toffees have only kept four clean sheets from 22 matches since mid-January, including just two from the past 13.

Both teams scored in the last five of these, with Everton winning despite conceding in fixtures with West Brom, Palace, West Ham and Brighton before their stalemate with Liverpool.

Both teams have also scored in all seven head to heads between these two since 2017/18 and we can envisage a similar outcome here.

Everton To Win 2-1

Although the hosts should be able to test Everton’s backline, the form of the current league leaders encourages us to get behind them regardless.

The Saints are just W4-D2-L6 at St. Mary’s in all competitions since mid-January, while in the league alone they’ve still found the net in 11 of 15 home defeats since December 2018. Five of these finished 2-1 and a further three ended 3-1, with those correct scores also of interest.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

With Richarlison absent and James Rodriguez primarily dealing in assists and opening teams up with his creativity, there’s even more reason to continue backing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to continue his fine form.

The newly capped England striker rescued a point against Liverpool with his 10th goal of the season across all competitions, and the 23-year-old is performing with supreme confidence as he’s found the net at least once in all six encounters with Premier League clubs so far.
