This is undoubtedly one of the standouts from this round of Europa League fixtures as favourites Man United take on an extremely talented Real Sociedad side.
The two have gone in different directions over the last few months with United hitting a low point having dropped down from the Champions League after the group stage, only to lose just two of their 19 matches since then.
Sociedad made a flying start to La Liga and were leading the way just 10 matches ago, though they’ve now won just four of 19 games going back into late November.
There maybe early signs of momentum building once again for the Spaniards though with back-to-back wins as they head into this game.
This is just Sociedad’s third Europa League campaign this century and they’ve never managed to get past this stage, while even this year they only managed to scrape through the groups with two wins from their six games, and considering they played in a group with AZ Alkmaar and HNK Rijeka that doesn’t stand them in good stead against a European giant like Man United.
The Red Devils are experienced vets at this level, losing to eventual winners Sevilla last season and winning this competition back in 2016/17.
That defeat against Sevilla last season was just United’s second defeat in 23 games in this competition, with the other coming away to Astana when effectively fielding a full youth team, so their credentials should carry them through this tie.
As has been the case with many ties across both of Europe’s top tier competitions, this match has been moved away from the Anoeta Stadium to Turin to comply with COVID regulations across the continent.
Of all teams, that won’t have much of a negative effect on Sociedad considering they’ve picked up far more points in the road than at home this year, though this will still effectively feel like an away game for United, who remain the only unbeaten team on their travels in the Premier League, while in all competitions they have a strong W12-D4-L2 record on the road, with both defeats coming in the Champions League.
Bruno Fernandes To Score Anytime
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have seen an average of just 1.2 goals per game across their last five road trips, though we’d be unsure of backing an ‘Unders’ bet on neutral territory with Real Sociedad more than capable of getting on the scoresheet against a defence that has shown frailties in the past.
What we can almost be certain of though, is the fact that Bruno Fernandes will be central to anything that United do, and if he’s on song they have every chance of taking a lead back to Old Trafford.
The Portuguese midfielder has 35 goal involvements from as many games this season, and has three goals in his last three starts, so we’ll back him to get on the scoresheet again in Turin.
