Paul Ince Exclusive: Can Rangnick Convince Pogba To Stay

A lack of clear direction at Manchester United could be the final nail in the coffin for Paul Pogba’s second stint at the club – that’s according to former Red Devils’ star Paul Ince. Despite a bright start to the 2021-22 season, rumours regarding the 2018 World Cup winner’s future continue to swirl. The midfielder’s reported £15million-a-year contract expires next summer, so the Old Trafford outfit could face losing Pogba for nothing – just six years after signing him for close to £90million. And Ince believes not knowing who will be in the hot seat for 2022 and beyond could be the final straw.

Interim Timings Could Cause Problems

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “If United got someone like (Mauricio) Pochettino in now, on a long-term contract, then he says to Paul Pogba, ‘Listen Paul, you’re part of my plan and I’m playing you like this’, Pogba might start thinking about signing a new contract.

“We’ve got Ralf Rangnick in and he can say the same thing, but Pogba’s going to say, ‘In four months’ time you might not be here, and whoever comes in might not fancy me’, so this is the problem we have with players.

Pogba Better Alongside Higher Calibre

The Red Devils’ No.6 has won the Europa League and the League Cup during his second spell at the club, but is some way short of the eight trophies he earned with former side Juventus.

Ince feels that could be because Pogba is better when surrounded by higher calibre players in the centre of the park:

“Pogba is a world-class player when he wants to be, we’ve seen him play in a World Cup final for France and he looks a completely different player, but I believe he’s playing with better players, that’s why,” he explained.

“When you’ve got world-class players alongside you and then you’re playing with Fred, (Scott) McTominay and (Nemanja) Matic, who’s obviously getting on a bit, it’s a completely different kettle of fish.

“To perform well you’ve got to play with the best players, and Pogba’s not had that.”

Pogba Negative Press

During his five seasons back in Manchester, Pogba has never been too far away from negative stories in the press – which Ince claims hasn’t helped the Frenchman’s cause.

The former midfield enforcer also believes that things would have been different under the manager who gave the Parisian his professional debut, Sir Alex Ferguson:

“He (Pogba) has not adhered himself to the fans at times and his agent hasn’t adhered himself to the fans at times – we’ve seen a lot of stuff come out with Pogba, especially when Mourinho was there, that was kind of plastered all over the papers,” he said.

“That would never have happened under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He started the season so well, at the start of the season he had the most assists, and I’m thinking this is Pogba, this is what he’s all about.

“For some stupid reason, Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) decided to play him as a holding midfield player alongside Fred against Wolves away and from there it just went downhill.

“I don’t think he’ll sign; I don’t think he’ll sign whoever the manager is, that’s my honest opinion.

“I think as a free agent the world’s his oyster and I can see him going abroad somewhere, we see a lot of top players going on free transfers, so I can see him going elsewhere.”
