Motherwell are enjoying a great season and if you’d offered them third place behind the Old Firm duo before a ball was kicked, they’d have bitten your hand off.
However, a goalless stalemate hosting Hibs and a 1-0 defeat on the road at Livingston in their last two outings is hardly ideal preparation for this clash, especially as they failed to even register a shot on target at the weekend against the latter.
Past results versus the Hoops doesn’t offer up too much encouragement either. Celtic have won their last four encounters with Motherwell by an aggregate score of 14-3, triumphing by at least two clear goals in each of them and by three in all but one of them.
Meanwhile, Motherwell have also lost each of their past seven matches against the Old Firm duo combined, trailing at the break in six of these, while six of them also saw them downed by at least two goals.
Given Celtic have won by two clear strikes at Kilmarnock and then by three-goal margins in their past three against Ross County, St. Johnstone and Hamilton, they look well placed to inflict a similar defeat once more as their output has increased.
They’ll no doubt receive a psychological boost with Rangers dropping points again, handing them some breathing room in the title race, and they have plenty of momentum behind them now.
Celtic -1 Handicap
Across all competitions, Celtic have racked up 21 victories from 23 matches dating back into October, with 14 of these seeing them triumph by at least two clear goals.
That record becomes even better when excluding Old Firm derbies, their clashes with Lazio in the Europa League (the Italians are third in Serie A this term with a game in hand over Inter), as well as a dead rubber meeting with Romanians CFR Cluj as Neil Lennon fielded a second-string side.
In the absence of those sides, the Hoops have won all 18 games over this period and by two goals or more in 14.
Odsonne Edouard To Score Anytime
Odsonne Edouard was in fine fettle at the weekend, registering twice against Hamilton, and his brace takes him to 18 goals in 21 league appearances this term, including six from the last five.
The 22-year-old has seven in five encounters with Motherwell in which he’s played at least a half, which includes four from the last three as he scored in each, so he looks a healthy price to continue his good form with Celtic creating plenty of chances at the moment.
