Manchester City v Southampton Preview And Predictions - Premier League Week Five

Manchester City look to make it four consecutive wins when they take on Southampton at the Etihad on Saturday. After a surprise opening loss, Pep Guardiola's team have started to hit their straps, their most recent win a comprehensive midweek 6-3 thrashing of Leipzig getting them off to a winning start in the Champions League group stages. After a poor start to the 2020/21 campaign when losing to Spurs, Man City have been outstanding since. A 6-3 victory over Leipzig during the week saw the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden make their first appearances of the season too and their strength in depth is quite frightening.

Southampton have been a hard team to beat this term. Only Everton at Goodison Park have been able to overturn them from their five outings in all competitions, although their solitary victory came against Newport County in the League Cup.

That does include impressive stalemates against Man Utd and West Ham, but we would mention that both of those came at St Mary’s Stadium where they are considerably better.

On the road, it has been a tough time for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men, losing 11 of their 13 league trips dating back to the start of January, with the aggregate scoreline over those being 38-10.

In fact, that includes nine straight defeats on the road at top half sides last term and the best team they’ve visited this season in Everton, failing to score in six.

Man City To Win To Nil

The Citizens have won all their last three home games 5-0 now when including last seasons’ dispatching of the Toffees on the final day.

They’ve also won their last nine home matches against bottom half outfits both this term and the last, winning to nil in seven, and although one of those anomalies was against the Saints in their last trip here that finished 5-2, we’re struggling to see how they get past this solid defence.

Neither team has any injuries of any note should one of John Stones or Aymeric Laporte be back to full fitness and we just can’t look past anything but a dominant Citizens victory.

You only have to see the likes of Jack Grealish excelling in the Champions League to know the sort of firepower they possess and with de Bruyne and Foden coming back into the fray, the options at Pep Guardiola’s fingertips are staggering.

Picking a goalscorer from one of his teams can be a daunting task, with it being a roulette as to who is going to start.

However, we do like the chances of Ferran Torres should he start. The Spaniard has been deployed as their striker for this season and with two goals and an assist in his only full 90 minutes at home this season, he could be the one to look out for.

PREDICTION:

MAN CITY TO WIN TO NIL
