Juventus take on Lyon in the first leg of the Champions League last 16, knowing their draw could have been a lot more difficult. Juventus remain top of Serie A after their 2-1 win over SPAL on the weekend and will be looking to take control of the tie on Wednesday night. Recent Form

Lyon were crushed 5-1 on aggregate by Barcelona at this stage last year, even if all the goals came in the second leg at the Nou Camp, but there’s little to suggest they’re going to match Juventus here.

Following third-placed finishes domestically in both 2017/18 and 18/19, Lyon find themselves down in seventh this term, with another four teams below them on the same number of points.

The loss of key man Memphis Depay in December until the end of the season has undoubtedly weakened them, with the Dutch international registering 14 goals in 18 appearances this season, including a strike in each of his five appearances in this tournament.

However, the French outfit benefited from a soft group featuring RB Leipzig, Benfica and Zenit, finishing marginally ahead of the latter two.

That means the only elite team Les Gones have faced this season has been PSG in Ligue 1. They lost both of those games by an aggregate 5-2 scoreline, and while they took four points off of Man City in last season’s group stages, the knockouts are a different kettle of fish and Juventus are more experienced travellers at this level.

Juventus To Beat Lyon

The Old Lady won their group ahead of Atletico Madrid by a six-point margin, with their only dropped points coming at the Wanda Metropolitano despite having been the better team on the night.

Maurizio Sarri’s side have however encountered a few away day troubles recently with defeats at Napoli and Verona, as well as a stalemate with a struggling Milan in the Coppa Italia in their last four on the road.

Juventus also suffered an unexpected loss away to Swiss outfit Young Boys in last season’s group stages and then at Atletico in this round 12 month ago.

However, with a W12-D4-L3 record on their travels in Europe since 2016/17, including wins at top outfits Sevilla, Lyon themselves, Porto, Spurs, Real Madrid, Valencia, Man Utd and Leverkusen, it’s hard to look past them with Lyon having regressed this term.

Gonzalo Higuain is a doubt for this clash, as are long-term absentees Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa, Merih Demiral and Miralem Pjanic, though the Argentine striker hasn’t proven a goal machine this season and is yet to reach double figures across all competitions. Fellow attacker Paulo Dybala looked to be on his way out of Turin in the summer, but he’s become more integral to the side and has developed a fine understanding with Cristiano Ronaldo, reaching double figures for both goals and assists.

The trio have rarely played together this season, with only four games where they each played at least a whole half, as Juventus lost two of those against Napoli and Lazio.

That would suggest there’s better balance to be had with just two of them, and so the absence of Higuaín shouldn’t be disastrous for the visitors.
