Recent Form
Liverpool saw out a 2-0 victory over Porto in their mid-week European fixture, a result that didn’t come as a surprise considering Porto’s bad form in England and the success that Liverpool see when playing at their fortress, Anfield.
They played a surprisingly strong team seeing that they had already secured qualification for the next stage of the tournament, with the likes of both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both starting and Andy Robertson showing his face for the final 30 minutes after coming back from a slight injury.
Southampton as of late have significantly improved with a record of W3-D1-L1 in their last five games, their latest game was against Norwich which they managed to lose 2-1 and that result could come back to haunt them when we start getting into the business end of the season.
The Saints have managed to get results in lots of tough games this season with draws coming against West Ham, Manchester United and City.
Liverpool To Win To Nil
Liverpool easily come out on top in the head-to-head between the two sides, their record against the Saints being W7-D2-L1 across the last 10 meetings.
Their only loss was a 1-0 defeat at St. Mary’s when Liverpool had lots of injury problems, namely that they couldn’t start a single recognised central defender because Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were all out.
Amongst these ten head-to-heads, Liverpool managed to keep a clean sheet in seven whilst scoring an average of 1.9 goals, this may seem low for Liverpool's standards but they failed to score in three of these games, most notably two 0-0 draws in the 16/17 season.
This fixture will be played at Anfield which only makes it worse for Southampton considering Liverpool’s outstanding record when they have the home advantage.
Liverpool have only lost eight of 101 games in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp when they play at home, seven of these eight losses all came in a row last season and out of those games, they have kept a clean sheet in 45 of them.
Only Norwich have scored fewer goals than Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this season, and the absence of Danny Ings is really beginning to show.
Armando Broja remains their most prolific option, though since netting his most recent goal he’s only managed two substitute appearances, and we can’t see any way of the visitors finding the net here.
PREDICTION:
LIVERPOOL TO WIN TO NIL
