Liverpool’s game at the weekend ended 1-0 against club legend Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa. That was the second 1-0 result in a row for the Reds, and with that result coming via a Mo Salah penalty, it’s the first time they’ve failed to score from open play since hosting Chelsea all the way back in August.
Eddie Howe has had a rough start to his reign at Newcastle, after finally getting a win versus relegation battler’s Burnley last weekend it looked like things were on the up as they went to play the out of form Leicester at the King Power Stadium.
Sadly it didn’t go the Magpies way with the game ending 4-0, and it’s now back to the drawing board for Howe and his staff, and it may be somewhat wishful if they think they can pick up some extra points from this clash.
Liverpool To Win And Over 3.5 Goals
Liverpool don’t have as impressive a record against the Magpies as you might think, only twice doing the double over the Tyneside club in the last 10 seasons that they’ve faced each other.
While both of those did come in the last three campaigns, the two matches played last season both resulted in draws (0-0, 1-1), but prior to that the Reds had won the last five meetings.
That 0-0 draw last season was the only clean sheet Jurgen Klopp’s men have kept in the last five head-to-heads, and while Liverpool have been defensively sound of late, only Watford have scored more than Newcastle from the current bottom-six.
Newcastle are having their worst season in the last ten years, after 16 games they have never had less than their current total of ten points. Last season they were nine points ahead of where they are now, and the season before last they were 12 points ahead.
Eddie Howe and the new Saudi backers know that they have a mountain to climb if they want to stay in the Premier League this season, we expect to see some key defensive signings in the January transfer window.
Newcastle have conceded the most amount of goals this season with 34 goals against the good and Liverpool have scored the most with 45 goals to their name already this season.
This shows us that goals are on the cards for this game, with Newcastle only picking up three points away from home, this is almost a nailed on victory for the hosts.
