The ceremonial start to the English domestic season kicks off on Saturday. Recent Form

The Community Shield has been a low scoring affair in recent history, there has only been one team to score more than two goals since 2013 with that exception coming as Arsenal beat Manchester City back in 2014 by a 3-0 score line. In the seven games that followed Arsenal’s win, six of them have resulted in under 2.5 goals and three of them went to penalties with a score of 1-1.

Liverpool have featured twice during this time and lost both on penalties (1-1 v Man City and 1-1 v Arsenal) whereas City have had three appearances and W2-L1 (2-0 v Chelsea and 1-1 v Liverpool, 1-0 loss v Leicester).

Jurgen Klopp has been known during his time at Liverpool for putting out weaker sides during his domestic cup competitions but when they played the Citizens in this competition back at the start of 2019 season, he put out his strongest team with the exception of Sadio Mane who was injured at the time, suggesting he knows the importance a win in this game can give a side heading into the new season, especially a clash between the title contenders.

Liverpool And Man City To Draw

It is difficult to say which personnel will play for Pep Guardiola’s side. Whilst the Sky Blues did play a strong team against Liverpool back in 2019 and Chelsea the year before, the team that faced, and lost, to Leicester last year was considerably weaker compared to what a full strength team would look like.

Samuel Edozie and Cole Palmer were the two shock starters but their lack of depth on the bench was staggering with Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish being the only stand out names.

We know how low scoring this competition has been in the past but whenever these two teams met last season it was goals galore. The two Premier League matches both finished 2-2 and the other match played was in the semi-final of the FA Cup when Liverpool took a   3-0 lead going into the break, the game eventually finished 3-2 with a late consolation goal for Bernardo Silva.

Considering that three out of the last five matches played between the two sides has been a draw and the last five Community Shield matches have yielded the same number of stalemates, there is good value on a draw here.
