Recent Form
Liverpool have slipped to fourth in the table after failing to win in four league outings, which included stalemates with West Brom and Newcastle, as well as a defeat to Southampton.
They may have registered an FA Cup win over Aston Villa during this period, but a coronavirus outbreak at the midlands club ensured weak opposition, in a reverse from last season where Liverpool fielded the kids against Villa as the seniors were away at the Club World Cup.
Although it’s at the back where Liverpool have suffered injuries, they’ve lost their sparkle in attack recently and they’ve now gone three games without a goal. Surprisingly, there’s been a maximum of two goals in nine of Liverpool’s past 13 in all competitions, including four of the last five, so we wouldn’t bank on high entertainment.
However, nobody expects the Reds to continue misfiring for long with formidable trio Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino all available, and they’ll hope to take inspiration from previous head to heads with Burnley.
Under 2.5 Goals
Liverpool have won four of five unbeaten clashes since 2018, though they’ve struggled to contain the Claret’s physical threat as both teams have scored in six of the last seven meetings, with the most recent clash a 1-1 draw here at Anfield in July.
We’re not quite so sure both sides will register this time around though, as Burnley are also struggling for output at present, with their games typically low-scoring affairs.
There’s been fewer than three goals in eight of their last nine in all competitions, including each of the past five as they went down 1-0 on three occasions.
Away from home, Sean Dyche’s men have only mustered one goal in seven matches, with six of these games featuring a total of just one strike or none at all.
Liverpool To Win To Nil
At least one team has failed to score in 12 of Burnley’s last 14 league appearances, with the Clarets failing to score in nine of them, including all six of their defeats over this period.
Given four of those losses were inflicted by top sides Tottenham, Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd, a similar outcome would be no surprise.
Chelsea (3-0) and Man City (5-0) were the only ones to win by more than 1-0, but the reigning champions don’t look like running away from teams at the moment.
Liverpool do at least have Joel Matip back in contention and alongside the versatile Fabinho, forms the Red’s best central pairing beyond injured duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
The hosts may have to be patient to find the breakthrough with Burnley only conceding two first half goals across their last seven league fixtures, but one goal should be enough to claim the spoils in the end.
