Recent Form

Lazio last reached the Champions League knockouts 21 years ago, but they are dangerous opponents under Simone Inzaghi and took four points from Dortmund in the group stage, including a 3-1 win here at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, while they went undefeated across six encounters with the German outfit, Club Brugge and Zenit, they only sneaked through with as many as four stalemates.

A 2-2 draw hosting the Belgian side on matchday six was just about enough, with their opponents going down to 10 men in the first half and even hitting the bar late on in that clash.

If Lazio are to advance any further, they’re going to need to take advantage in this first leg. Bayern have endured a heavy schedule having already played 34 times this season, returning recently from the Club World Cup in Qatar.

They may have only played two encounters with sub-standard teams, but the trip has clearly had an impact with the Bavarians managing just one point from two Bundesliga outings since then, as Leipzig have closed the gap to just two points.

Hansi Flick also has concerns surrounding a number of players. Midfielder Corentin Tolisso has suffered yet another long-term injury, attacking duo Douglas Costa and Serge Gnabry are also sidelined with injury, while Thomas Muller and Benjamin Pavard miss out through positive coronavirus tests.

The latter’s absence should see Niklas Sule continue at right-back, but he’s more comfortable in the centre and suffered a poor game away in the defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend.

Inzaghi will have to make do with Thomas Strakosha, but Pepe Reina is a solid and experienced deputy to have between the sticks. However, he’s also missing centre-backs Luiz Felipe and Stefan Radu, as well as bit-part player Andreas Pereira.

Lazio +1 Asian Handicap

Lazio are dangerous opponents and have won eight of 10 fixtures heading into this clash. However, although this spell did include wins over Roma and Atalanta, it also includes defeats to Inter and Atalanta as well, in the toughest games they’ve had over this period.

We wouldn’t want to get behind the hosts in the outright when considering Bayern have won 16 of 17 unbeaten matches in this tournament since the start of last season, but they may be worth siding with on the Asian handicap.

Indeed, the Italian outfit have lost by more than a single goal in just one of their past 15 on home turf, winning each of their past seven there.

Either way, there should be some goals in this encounter with Lazio missing players in defence and Bayern certainly stronger going forwards than they are at the back.

Over 3.5 Goals

Both teams scored in each of Lazio’s six group stage encounters, as all three home clashes saw four strikes, while both sides have also found the net in 12 of their 16 home encounters across all competitions this season.

Moreover, the German giants have conceded five goals in their past two outings, meaning they’ve conceded 31 league goals already this term from just 22 games.

Seven of Bayern’s past 10 domestic outings have featured at least four goals, while there’s been at least three goals in 13 of their 17 Champions League games since start of last season, as nine saw four of more.

Ciro Immobile To Score Anytime

Robert Lewandowski is understandably at a short price to register, but there should be greater value getting behind Lazio’s main marksman.

Ciro Immobile continues to score by the bucketload at club level and has found the net at least once in 17 of his past 23 appearances, including five goals from four outings in this competition as he scored in each.

He has an able support cast with the likes of Luis Alberto and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and given Bayern often play with a high line, the Italian (who was the only player across Europe’s top five leagues to outgun Lewandowski last term) should have space to run in behind.

Over 3.5 Goals At 23/20

0.5pts: Lazio +1 Asian Handicap At 4/5

0.5pts: Ciro Immobile To Score Anytime At 11/8
