Chile have a case of ‘draw-itis’ with four 1-1 stalemates from their past five matches, while the other was a 1-0 win over Bolivia, as each of these appearances were competitive outings.

Bolivia look very much like Group A’s weakest side as they’re pointless after two games ahead of facing Uruguay, so Chile look set to struggle to claim outright victories at present.

Indeed, the 2016 Copa America winners are W4-D8-L5 over 90 minutes since the knockout stages of the 2019 Copa America, winning just two of 12 competitive games over this period.

Paraguay also won the two most recent clashes between the two sides, with these coming back in 2016 and 2017, so it’s hard to get behind the bookie’s favourites in this one.

That’s especially the case given that Paraguay have demonstrated an ability to grind results out recently. They endured a terrible run of results between May 2016 and October 2019, though they’ve slowly turned things around under Eduardo Berizzo.

They’re W3-D6-L2 from their past 11 games, with heavyweights Brazil (2-0) and Argentina (1-0) the only sides to beat them.

Chile And Paraguay To Draw 1-1

That loss to Argentina in their most recent outing saw Paraguay enjoy just over 50% of possession, despite their opponents having plenty of players who can look after the ball, but they struggled to convert that into clear cut chances.

Although conceding fewer goals under Eduardo Berizzo, committing 23 fouls last time out to break up the play, output has generally been a problem and they’ve scored more than once in just three of 12 matches now (twice against Bolivia and once against Peru).

However, excluding those defeats to Brazil and Argentina, they have still netted in seven of nine games and a 1-1 stalemate here would come as no surprise.

Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron was the dangerman against Argentina, but although helping his team going forwards, he’s not prolific in terms of goals.

In fact, he netted just four in the league at club level last season and has registered just twice from his 33 international caps to date.

It’s Angel Romero and Alejandro Romero who look more likely to deliver at the sharp end, with a combined eight goals from Paraguay’s eight games since the start of 2020.

Chile’s games might be tight affairs, but they’ve only produced a single clean sheet from their past seven matches, conceding in two of three encounters with Bolivia over this period and also when facing Venezuela.

That encourages us that Paraguay can get a goal from somewhere, especially as they’ve found the net in each of their past six meetings with Chile.
