Having last qualified for the Champions League group stage back in 2017/18, the last thing Celtic would have wanted was to draw Danish Superliga runners-up Midtjylland.

Their opponents thumped both Young Boys and Slavia Prague en route to the group stage last season in qualifiers and acquitted themselves reasonably well, given they were handed a tough group featuring Liverpool, Atalanta and Ajax, taking points off the English and Italian outfits in the process.

Still, the Danish side did fall to defeats in both legs of a Europa League qualifier to Rangers in 2019/20, while they kicked off their league campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat hosting Odense BK on Friday.

Like Celtic, they’re heading into the season under new management with Bo Henriksen at the helm, though the 46-year-old hasn’t managed at this level before and will be taking part in his first European tie.

Neil Lennon’s second spell in Glasgow didn’t go to plan and Ange Postecoglou has been handed the reins, though the Australian can boast some achievements in management so far.

Most notably, a four-year stint at the head of his national side saw him gain experience at the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 Asian Cup, winning the latter, while he’s since guided Yokohama F. Marinos to their first J. League title in 15 years in 2019.

Over 2.5 Goals

Postecoglou has quite the job on his hand as he seeks to overhaul Celtic’s squad, though a lack of new signings looks set to hamper his immediate progress.

Centre-back appears to be a key area of concern ahead of this game, with both Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer absent, especially given the defence failed to convince last season.

Celtic have registered just one clean sheet across four pre-season friendlies so far and on the evidence of their most recent outing, a defeat hosting Preston North End, there’s plenty of work to be done on the training ground.

Midtjylland are hardly looking watertight at the back either. Both teams have scored in all three of their pre-season friendlies so far, as well as their opening day league game, as all of these matches featured at least three goals.

In fact, in competitive outings alone, there’s been at least three goals in nine of their last 11 appearances, and four or more in seven of them.

Excluding their tougher Champions League group stage matches last season, over 2.5 goals has landed in 14 of Midtjylland’s last 20 European games since 2017/18, while both teams also scored in 14 of these as well.

Moreover, both teams to score has also come in for each of Celtic’s past six European matches as these all featured at least four goals, with the last four seeing a minimum of five goals each.

Over 2.5 Goals At 19/20
