Bulgaria v Republic of Ireland Preview And Betting Tips – Nations League Round One

The Republic of Ireland get back down to international business when they take on Bulgaria in their opening Nations League clash on Thursday night. In what looks to be a very open group featuring Wales and Finland, Stephen Kenny will be looking for his team to get off to a winning start and build some early momentum. Recent Form

Stephen Kenny replaced Mick McCarthy as Ireland’s head coach in April, but the latter has left the team a tough nut to crack and they’ve lost just once in 12 outings since November 2018 (W5-D6-L1).

However, all but one of those victories came on home turf, with the exception a narrow 1-0 win at minnows Gibraltar. There’s a distinct lack of goals in the squad with Robbie Brady (eight), James McClean (10) and Shane Long (17) the only ones to haves scored more than three times for the national side.

Under 2.5 Goals

With a solid defence, but a void of creativity and a lack of clinical finishing, a massive 21 of Ireland’s last 26 matches have seen fewer than three goals. That includes 13 of the past 15, as well as all but one of their last 12 on the road.

Bulgaria are no strangers to low-scoring affairs either with nine of their past 14 also going under that same threshold, with just one goal in each of their three outings under Georgi Dermendzhiev so far.

They too lack any sort of focal point, with only one player in their squad netting three times for Bulgaria, despite just eight of their 25-man squad being under 25 years old.

Ireland Draw No Bet

Although Ireland only have one win across their past 10 on their travels, Bulgaria do appear there for the taking following a W1-D5-L8 record dating back to October 2018. That includes seven defeats from the past nine, including crushing 4-0 and 6-0 losses to England, as well as going down 3-1 to Ireland themselves in a friendly.

We’re not expecting further explosive action here, but Ireland have a slight edge and we expect them to take at least a point. However, should they taste success, we’d have to back the 1-0 correct score.

The visitors have failed to score more than once in any of their last 14 road trips, though of the six times they drew a blank, five of these came against Denmark (twice), Turkey, France and Switzerland. Bulgaria aren’t anywhere near the level of those teams, so we’d expect Ireland to get their goal.

Ireland To Win 1-0

Ireland’s poor away form leaves us reticent to back them outright to claim maximum points. However, their solid nature and Bulgaria’s dire form makes it impossible to see them walking away with nothing.

Each of Ireland’s last 3 away wins have finished 1-0 (over Austria, Wales and Gibraltar) and given their consistent struggles to score on the road, the correct score is worth paying attention to.
