Michael Smith v Peter Wright

Both these players put in underwhelming displays at the UK Open over the weekend, with Smith succumbing to defeat against Rob Cross in the last 32, while Wright only went one step further before bowing out to eventual semi-finalist Daryl Gurney. These two last met in Belgium back at the beginning of the month, with Bully Boy coming through by a narrow 7-5 margin, which has levelled the recent head to heads at W5-D2-L5 apiece since the beginning of 2018, so this really is anybody’s game.

What’s more, Smith has begun to hit similar form as the Scot lately. The Englishman has won his last three Premier League matches to propel him into second place behind unlikely leader Glen Durrant, while a run to the final in Belgium, beating Michael van Gerwen and Snake Bite himself en route, was no mean feat. Snake Bite’s Last 16 run in the UK open is his worst tournament outing of 2020, as he’s reached three quarters, three semis and won three tournaments dating back to the Worlds, so we’ll avoid the outright.

A staple of Wright’s game recently has been the consistency at which he’s managed 180s. His 17 so far this tournament is only matched by Gary Anderson, and in what is a crucial match for the Scot if he is looking to push up into those playoff places, 180s are going to be imperative to his chances and we’ll back him on the match bet in that regard.

Peter Wright 180s Match Bet At 21/10

Daryl Gurney v Glen Durrant

After five matches you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would have put Duzza at the top of the Premier League table, though with just one defeat so far no one can argue he doesn’t deserve to be there, while he’ll now play in a top v bottom clash to try and strengthen his grip on top spot and give him a real shot at the play-offs.

Daryl Gurney has been underwhelming so far and has just two points from five to leave him rock bottom, though this isn’t a foregone conclusion. A semi-final run at the UK open last weekend will fill him with confidence, especially considering he toppled World Number 2 Peter Wright 10-6 on the way, with an average of 99.33. With how closely packed the league is this year (only five points separate top from bottom), the Northern Irishman is by no means out of the equation, though you get the feeling anything but a victory from this would mean a serious uphill battle.

Durrant’s underlying stats don’t have him head and shoulders above SuperChin for this one, seeing as he’s only tonned up once from his last 10 matches, while his six 180s so far in the Premier League are the lowest out of anyone. The head-to-heads are tied at two apiece, and with Gurney coming out on top in the Premier League last year he’s already proven he can do it on this stage, and if he can start landing his doubles with consistency, he’ll be very much in this game.

Daryl Gurney To Win At 9/5

Gerwyn Price v Michael van Gerwen

Arguably the highlight clash of the evening sees the in form Gerwyn Price take on defending champion and world number one Michael van Gerwen. Price has become something of a draw merchant in the Premier League over this year and last, though he suffered only his first defeat so far when he took on now Premier League leader Glen Durrant. Duzza performed spectacularly on the night and fully deserved the victory having tonned up, though that is nothing but a blemish on what has been a spectacular few weeks for the Iceman, who recovered to reach the UK Open final last week, where he played out a thriller with van Gerwen himself.

Magic Mike came through that final, having taken advantage of some poor checking out from his opponent which silenced some of his doubters. The Dutchman’s run included some extremely impressive averages and a nine dart finish which will stand him in good stead for this one.

While it’s difficult to gauge a winner here, especially considering recent form and the rollercoaster that was their meeting in the last final, what we can almost guarantee is that this will be a match of supreme quality. We fully expect high averages and 180s should be aplenty and we’ll happily plop for overs at the prices, particularly with the assumption that this match could go the distance.

Over 6.5 Match 180s At 5/4

Rob Cross v Stephen Bunting

Rob Cross has been far from his best this year, with a quarter at the UK Open and the same run in Wigan last month his best performances since October. A 6-6 draw last week with Daryl Gurney kept them both in the bottom two of the table as Cross failed to capitalise in the last leg, though he has a serious opportunity against the Bullet in Liverpool.

Stephen Bunting comes in as the selected challenger for week 6, and is coming off some good results after a semi-final in Wigan last month and a Last 16 run at the UK Open, where he bowed out to Voltage himself. That said, the first challenger ever to win a Premier League match was Luke Humphries last week and we can’t see two challenger victories coming along consecutively.

Cross has won each of the four meetings between the two and even though he was pushed all the way in a 10-8 win last time out, that was only last weekend and we can only see him pushing on here and claiming yet another victory over the Bullet.

Rob Cross To Win At 17/20

Gary Anderson v Nathan Aspinall

Anderson became the first player in Premier League history to lose to a challenger last weekend when he went down 7-5 to Luke Humphries, while he also failed to bounce back properly at the UK Open, falling to Jelle Klassen in the Last 16 to top off what was an underwhelming few days from the Flying Scotsman.

The Asp hasn’t exactly had a better time of it over the past week, though his hand was dealt a bit harder. The Englishman went down comfortably to Peter Wright in the last round, though the quality of darts was exceptional from both players, with Snake Bite finishing up with an average of exactly 110. Aspinall then drew Michael van Gerwen in the first round of the UK Open and put in a gutsy performance but ultimately fell short 10-8, though he’ll be desperate to get back to winning ways this Thursday.

Aspinall won their last clash at the World Champs at the end of 2018 and has definitely remained in the better form of the two since the start of this year too. Although you can never discount the Flying Scotsman, it’s hard to look past the Asp here and he should hold his own and strengthen his grip on the playoffs.

Nathan Aspinall To Win At 13/10
