Recent Form
This will be England’s first piece of test action since September, and there certainly are a few question marks over their lineup heading into the opening test here. England aren’t the force they once were, and without notable absentees Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes for this series, their lineup is further depleted against a competitive side.
In truth though, it’s not as tough the visitors are out of form, coming into this off the back of a 3-0 T20 series whitewash over South Africa, while on the test front they’ve won three of four unbeaten series since they went to New Zealand at the back end of 2019.
The hosts can’t boast that kind of form at all, winning just two of their last eight series and just four of their last 17 individual tests in that time, and with one of those victories coming against Zimbabwe they’ll have to do a lot to turn over England here.
Zak Crawley Top Scorer
If the travelling party can put on a display, they should take this game with comfort though a lot will rely on the likes of Joe Root, Joss Buttler and Zak Crawley to put in a performance as their lineup looks shallower than usual without the presence of Stokes.
Root hit an impressive unbeaten 74 in the warmup match, while Crawley also chipped in with a 46. Crawley is England’s top test run scorer with 417 runs from his six innings since February last year, at an average of 69.5, and he looks well priced to outscore his teammates again on this occasion with very few proving they can be the one to top score.
England To Beat Sri Lanka
This should be a spin dominated series and we’d be reluctant to get behind one of the standout seamers to be the top wicket taker, especially considering Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson managed just the single wicket between them in their 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka two years ago, and with Jack Leach impressing with the ball in the warmup, he could cause some serious damage on this wicket.
England To Beat Sri Lanka At 23/20
